My goal for this project was to capture the themes of the story in the book cover. The main themes include the power of self-reliance, the trauma of abandonment, and the beauty and healing nature of the natural world. To capture this, I decided to illustrate a sunset over the marsh with the main character lookin out over the scenery. The soft pastel colors show her healing in the end of the story and the sunset symbolizes the trauma she experienced and her overcoming that. I added a blue heron on the horizon because it is a symbol of her self reliance.
